Twister in Penang?

I saw this in the newspaper the other day. It is somewhat an unusual phenomenon here in Malaysia. Sometime last year I blogged about a similar event that took place in JB. Now it happened in Penang.

Nature is beautiful, but can be deadly at times. Luckily the phenomenon that happened in Penang did not result as nature’s disaster.

However, it was a beautiful sight.

Technology Dilemma

Have you ever had the urge to buy an electronic product such as mobile phones, laptop or computer at one time thinking that the item is very cheap and you end up buying it, only to find out a few weeks later the same product with better configuration are priced the same or cheaper?

I hate it when that happens.

Yes, I am speaking from experience. So what else can we all do when this happens? Don’t buy the product? But at the same time we need it. Wait for better configuration and the right price? Wait until when?

It seems that whenever a certain product is launched, say a laptop computer, we know that it has the latest and best priced configuration of all. So we buy it. And then a few weeks later, the same product is being sold with double the configuration like 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB and Dual-Core instead of Single-Core at the same price. WTF?!?!

I’d say, memang sakit hati ler.

At the moment, AMD and Intel are racing to have the best Core processors in their products. Currently both are at Dual-Core processors. I know that AMD is launching their Quad-Core processors by the forth quarter of this year and Intel Xeon is already a Quad-Core processor. Now that is something to look forward to.

Ok, let’s fast forward abit. Say we purchase an awesome laptop with Quad-Core processing power and we know it has the best configuration. And then guess what? Few weeks later they come up with double Quad-Core, that means 8 Cores in one laptop. The price is more or less the same and double the configuration. Ok, I’m going too far. Don’t even wanna think about that now.

Same goes with mobile phones.  My best buddy Ron has been delaying his purchase for a new phone for a long time now. I started “tracking” his mobile phone delay since Nokia 3230. After that he saw the N70 on Nokia’s website and he waited for that. After N70, it was the N80 and then finally the N95 (I hope there’s no more after N95). Point is, he’s been wanting to buy a new phone since eons ago and still unable to purchase any of it simply because there’s a new product each month, and the new ones are better than the one he wanted. I hope he would stop at N95 and just buy it. Habis cerita.

I’m sure that I’m not the only one with this dilemma.

Joke of the day

A Malaysian dies and goes to hell. There he finds that there is a different hell for each country.

He goes first to the German hell and asks “What do they do here?” He is told “First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day.”

The man does not like the sound of that at all, so he moves on. He checks out the USA hell as well as the Russian hell and many more. He discovers that they are all more or less the same as the German hell.

Then he comes to the Malaysian hell and finds that there is a very long line of people waiting to get in. Amazed he asks “What do they do here?” He is told “First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the Malaysian devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day.” “But that is exactly the same as all the other hells - why are there so many people waiting to get in?”

“Because maintenance is so bad that the electric chair does not work, someone has stolen all the nails from the bed, and the devil is a former government servant, so he comes in, signs the register and then goes to the canteen…”

Evaluating Flock 0.9 Beta

Here goes another software evaluation. Previously I evaluated the Safari for Windows and then Ubuntu Linux with Wubi. Now, I will evaluate my personal favourite and default browser, Flock 0.9 Beta.

Why do I use Flock and not Firefox? It’s because I find that Flock is more user friendly and has a better interface than Firefox and besides, Flock is using exactly the same engine as Firefox. But what makes the beta version 0.9 better?

Alot has changed since version 0.8. I really mean alot. The most obvious change is the interface. Almost like a total revamp. It has a more shiny look on the main bar with more curves on the tab area. It also has a shortcut near the tab area for an easy access to Flocks main functions such as bookmarks, uploader, media bar, web clipboards, feed sidebar, “My World”, accounts & services and blog editor which I’m using to write this blog now.

Flock is made user friendly. For a beta version, it’s been stable thus far. I haven’t encounter any stability issues after trying this awesome browser the whole day although I’m sure there are some minor bugs here and there. That’s quite normal for a beta version.

I would love to go on evaluating this browser but I know I would take all night. It’s almost 7:30pm now and I’m still in the office. I need a break and time-out and have dinner. So, I’ll stop here for now. I know I’ll be using this browser again when I come to work tomorrow. Maybe I’ll continue on my review then.

At the moment, Flock gets a 5 star from me.
