Royal Visit

I had a hard time looking for the place. I know Royal Selangor Pewter is somewhere in Setapak. But how to get there? I’ve been to the Royal Selangor factory once, but that time I was picking up souvenirs from them for a golf tournament back in 2004. But making my way there after 3 years, the route is almost unfamiliar.

But thanks to my good navigational skills, I arrived at Royal Selangor Pewter factory without getting lost (or stopped at any 7–eleven asking for directions).

My task: To find a suitable souvenir gift for the Vice President of Indonesia and also for some of the high profiled Indonesian businessman.

The entrance to the showroom is just as I remembered it 3 years ago. Nothing much have changed, except for a few artworks on large plates are displayed for visitors to see.

I had to take a picture of this oversized beer mug (but why beer mug?). It is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest mug, made entirely with pewter.

Then I went into the showroom to meet up with the corporate sales personnel, Mr Xavier. He was kind enough to show me all the latest designs, from a small cute chinese tea set, to the huge plaque with a cool golden dragon embossed on the center.

“I gotta get a better camera…phone.”

I just love the dragon design. Heavy too.

Back to my task. I had to look for a suitable gift. Not too big and not too small. So I decide on the “Tepak Sireh” design, which is very normal. I said “normal” because it is the most popular pewter design to be given to international delegates. This symbolic artwork represents the Malay culture, passed down through many generations from our forefathers.

So this is what I picked. Bloody expensive too.

This is what I picked for the other delegates who we’ll be meeting up.

The VP of Indonesia will be getting a cool “Tepak Sireh” pewter design, but the other delegates will be getting the simple but uniquely Malaysian pewter plate. The embossed designs around the plate are based on many forms of Malaysian cultures. There’s wau, congkak, traditional dances, keris and many other symbolic Malaysian culture designs.

There are many other designs to choose from.

At first I was thinking of this tea set as a gift to the VP of Indonesia. But it’s not uniquely Malaysian enough.

The fish plaque is nice. Pewter and gold plated fishes. Nice…

Some other smaller items on display.

Oh yeah, the showroom was packed with tourists. Mostly from China, or Taiwan, or both I guess. Some are mat sallehs from dunno where.

One thing I can say about Royal Selangor Pewter, they have nice showroom. I also understand that customers can go in the pewter factory and design or craft their own pewter. I’m gonna try that out one day. I’m gonna create a work of art…. a ball (fuhh…senang je tu).

If you wanna create your own pewter artwork, just go there la.

Been a while…

My last post was almost a week ago. And since then I haven’t got the time to post any new entries to my blog. Probably the long holidays puts me in a mood of not doing anything. My holidays was just like any normal holidays, except with the almost no traffic jams while driving along the main roads.

Geena came back to KL for the holidays. Even so, we didn’t go anywhere to spend the holidays. The night before she departs back to Kota Bharu, we had dinner with Dr. Sunil and Dr. Patricia, who were Geena’s ex-colleagues. It’s been a while too since the last time I dine in American Chili’s.

As for my other life (working life), it has been hell of a recovery from the holiday moods. This is when laziness kicks in (happens to everyone too huh?), taking over the desire to finish up my unfinished tasks. Due to my bz-ness these past few days, I only managed to find the time to post something in my blog now.

Ooh, right now I have this sudden interest in downloading music videos from P2P networks. This is probably old story for some but for me, well, I don’t know. I just have the sudden interest in it lah. At the moment of writing this blog post, I am currently downloading the old-skool Tupac’s music video, California Love and Hit ‘Em Up. After this I’d probably start the download for Pussycat Dolls music videos (Sunil would love to get the videos from me later).

Oh good, it’s almost 6:30pm already…time to go home…

The Biggest Idiot in The World

Since I got no blog entries for these part few days, here a little something that I got through a forwarded email.

NEW YORK - Idaho resident Kathy Evans brought humiliation to her friends and family Tuesday when she set a new standard for stupidity with her appearance on the popular TV show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.”

It seems that Evans, a 32-year-old wife and mother of two, got stuck on the first question, and proceeded to make what fans of the show are dubbing “the absolute worst use of lifelines ever.” After being introduced to the show’s host Meredith Vieira, Evans assured her that she was ready to play, whereupon she was posed with an extremely easy $100 question. The question was:

“Which of the following is the largest?”
A) A Peanut
B) An Elephant
C) The Moon
D) Hey, who you calling large?

Immediately Mrs. Evans was struck with an all consuming panic as she realized that this was a question to which she did not readily know the answer.

“Hmm, oh boy, that’s a toughie,” said Evans, as Vieira did her level best to hide her disbelief and disgust. “I mean, I’m sure I’ve heard of some of these things before, but I have no idea how large they would be.”

Evans made the decision to use the first of her three lifelines, the 50/50. Answers A and D were removed, leaving her to decide which was bigger, an elephant or the moon. However, faced with an incredibly easy question, Evans still remained unsure.

“Oh! It removed the two I was leaning towards!” exclaimed Evans. “Darn. I think I better phone a friend.”

Using the second of her two lifelines on the first question, Mrs. Evans asked to be connected with her friend Betsy, who is an office assistant.

“Hi Betsy! How are you? This is Kathy! I’m on TV!” said Evans, wasting the first seven seconds of her call. “Ok, I got an important question. Which of the following is the largest? B, an elephant, or C, the moon. 15 seconds hun.”

Betsy quickly replied that the answer was C, the moon. Evans proceeded to argue with her friend for the remaining ten seconds.

“Come on Betsy, are you sure?” said Evans. “How sure are you? Puh, that can’t be it.”

To everyone’s astonishment, the moronic Evans declined to take her friend’s advice and pick ‘The Moon.’

“I just don’t know if I can trust Betsy. She’s not all that bright. So I think I’d like to ask the audience,” said Evans.

Asked to vote on the correct answer, the audience returned 98% in favor of answer C, ‘The Moon.’ Having used up all her lifelines, Evans then made the dumbest choice of her life.

“Wow, seems like everybody is against what I’m thinking,” said the too-stupid-to-live Evans. “But you know, sometimes you just got to go with your gut. So, let’s see. For which is larger, an elephant or the moon, I’m going to have to go with B, an elephant. Final answer.” Evans sat before the dumbfounded audience, the only one waiting with bated breath, and was told that she was wrong, and that the answer was in fact, C, ‘The Moon.’ (Duh!)

Vieira thanked Kathy Evans for coming on the show, and tried to make her feel better about winning zero dollars. But after the cameras stopped rolling, she stood up and smacked her across the face.

“How could anyone be so stupid?” shouted the irate Vieira to cheers from an approving crowd. “Get out! Get out of my studio this instant you stupid idiot!”

As Mrs. Evans left the studio, she was jumped and beaten by several angry audience members. She is currently listed in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

A Charity Event

Sometime last 2 weeks, my company held a charity event for some of the charity organisations in Malaysia. We donated a total of RM120,000 for 5 different organisations, which came from our Annual Golf event with Bursa Malaysia.

What moved me was the kids from the Down Syndrome and Autisme organisations. They were more than happy to be there among the corporate figures who attended the charity event. Not to mentioned that some of them were hyperactive, especially those who are suffering from Autism.

Autism is classified by the World Health Organization and American Psychological Association as a developmental disability that results from a disorder of the human central nervous system. It is diagnosed by impairments to social interaction, communication, interests, imagination and activities.

There are no known cure for this condition, therefore the parents have to educate the child about the environment from time to time, and mostly, they have to be very patient.

As for the down syndrome, well, I guess most of us know about down syndrome already.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who first described it in 1866. The condition is characterized by a combination of major and minor differences in body structure. Often Down syndrome is associated with some impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth as well as facial appearance. Down syndrome is usually identified at birth.

Individuals with Down syndrome can have a lower than average cognitive ability, often ranging from mild to moderate mental retardation. Developmental disabilities often manifest as a tendency toward concrete thinking or naïveté. A small number have severe to profound mental retardation. The incidence of Down syndrome is estimated at 1 per 800 to 1 per 1,000 births.

So the charity event that were held was dedicated to these special individuals. Other charity organisations that received the donation were MERCY Malaysia, HOSPIS Malaysia and Kidney Foundation.

Check out the photos from the event.

Sigh…

There goes my website. My web hosting expired recently and I won’t be able to update my main site at the moment. I’m thinking of switching hosting provider, one that is cheaper and faster. But when I think about all of my blog post in my site, I really don’t wanna lose it all.

I guess I have to renew my hosting subscription before they totally delete all my wordpress database.

Now that my site is down, I’m finding an alternative way of keeping my blog alive, hence this blog site. Now I only have to save some money for my main site to be up and running again…
