Last Saturday Geena, her mom and her sis, together with me of course, went for a day trip to Cameron Highlands. It has been almost 10 years since my last visit to Cameron. Things have changed since. Along the way, I see new developments coming up. 10 years ago, it was abit colder than it is now. Maybe back then, there weren’t as many developments.
The first place we came across was the Lata Iskandar Waterfalls. Thank god they preserve the place well. I saw visitors flocking the waterfall site, many of them were tourists. It’s good to know that they came to see the highlands in Malaysia. I will consider coming back to this waterfall one day for a swim, perhaps for camping as well. There’s a camp site near the foot of the hill, right before the ascend uphill. It would be cool to spend the night there.

Apart from the waterfall, there were stalls along the road with vendors selling fresh fruits. They said that they grew the fruits themselves in their home garden. Not to mention the orang Asli who sells petai along the way too. That I guarantee for anyone who visits Cameron will see.

And then, after almost an hour drive uphill from Lata Iskandar, the magnificent view of the Tea Plantations.

Nothing can be more soothing than viewing this panoramic view of the highlands. Vast land and the mountain air…what can be more refreshing? It was drizzling when we (almost) reached the top, right before Tanah Rata. That, plus the cold mountain air, was very refreshing for me.

What do people seek when they visit Cameron Highlands? Strawberries of course! It won’t be a complete trip if we don’t go to any one of the strawberry farms. I think the strawberry farm that we went to was Healthy Strawberry Farm, located right before the turn off towards the Strawberry Park Resort. They don’t just sell strawberries, there were flowers too. Lots and lots of them. Geena’s mom can’t stop herself from buying the flowers. So she ended up buying 7 types of flowers and fruits, each in it’s own pot to bring back to Sarawak. I wonder how she will bring it up in the airplane. hmmm…

There were many places to go and things to see. I very much prefer Cameron rather than Genting Highlands or Frasers Hill. Genting is the city of entertainment, but the developments that they had and is taking place destroys the eco-system. Genting is not as cold as it used to be. Frasers Hill on the other hand, is too quiet and secluded. If I want peace and quiet, I’d go to Frasers Hill. Cameron is a balance between the two. Not too quiet and not too developed.
Accomodation in Cameron is slightly expensive. But I would recommend a very cozy chalet called Bala’s Holiday Chalet. It was an old english school back from the colonial days, converted into a chalet type of resort. The price is just right for a room and for family. The design and atmosphere in the chalet is like being in an english countryside homes. Lovely.
One of these days, I’ll be making my way up to Cameron Highlands again. This time I might use the new highway, coming up from the opposite direction. I’m not sure which exit I should take from the PLUS highway. Perhaps any of you readers would leave a comment and let me know.
