Cook or Clean?

I came across an article on the internet while searching for nice recipes online, especially for buka puasa. It’s hard to resist food temptations during this fasting month so naturally food is always the main subject of any conversation. We always hear, “Nak buka puasa kat mana hari ni?” or “Apa nak makan for buka today?” in our daily fasting month routine. Come 5pm, we hear the same question left right center.

Anyway, amongst all those dishes (pun intended), have you ever heard of Poached Salmon in Dishwasher?

“Huh?” you say? Exactly my reaction as well.

The article…

It reminds me a little of Seinfeld’s Kramer prepping food in his shower, but Wine X Magazine has a recipe for poaching salmon in your dishwasher. This odd HOWTO was written by Bob Blumer, author of the book Surreal Gourmet. From the recipe:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COOK A WHOLE FISH!

1 Place fish packets on the top rack.

2 Add dirty dishes and lemon-scented soap. This optional step is not recommended for novices. However, as long as the salmon’s tightly sealed in its aluminum foil packet, it won’t absorb any soapy taste or smell.

3 Set dishwasher to the “normal” cycle. Modern dishwashers have “economy” and “cool dry” settings, which are undesirable since they conserve heat. However, on the other end of the spectrum, the “pots and pans” setting tends to overcook the fish.

4 Run salmon through the entire wash-and-dry cycle — approximately 50 minutes for most models.

5 When cycle’s complete, take salmon out, discard foil, place one fillet on each plate and spoon a generous serving of dill sauce on top.

Link to full recipe.

Even if I get very hungry, I don’t think I will use the dishwasher to poach any fish or whatsoever. I don’t want to have the fish smell like soap when it’s done. I know I know, I can seal the aluminium foil tightly but I don’t want to take any chances. I don’t want to end up having bubbles coming out of my mouth while talking to people.

But you are free to try out the recipe. Do tell me if it works. I’m sure it will work out fine, but do tell if it smells like soap or not.

This is a good one

An older lady gets pulled over for speeding. . .

Older Woman: Is there a problem, officer?

Officer: Ma’am, you were speeding.

Older Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I’d give it to you but I don’t have one.

Officer: Don’t have one?

Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving.

Officer: I see…Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Older Woman: I can’t do that.

Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.

Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma’am, could you step out of your vehicle please!

The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older woman: Is there a problem, sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma’am?

Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma’am. One of my officers told me you didn’t have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.

Sighting of the Crescent Moon

ManSightingMoonTonight will be the night where Muslims all over the country will be looking out for the Crescent Moon. Most of us in Malaysia would know that as “melihat anak bulan Ramadhan”. It is expected that fasting month will commence on Sunday, 24 September 2006. But we all have to watch the result from the Mohor Besar Raja-raja’s announcement later this evening.

Rasa macam baru beberapa bulan lalu kita sambut hari raya. Sekarang Ramadhan menjelang kembali. I think my kueh raya from last year pun belum habis lagi. How time flies.

It’s time to get ready for fasting month again. I bet all the bazaar Ramadhan hawkers are busy with their preparations. I bet all the usual bazaar Ramadhan’s patrons are anxious to munch on the goodies. But the main focus for Muslims is to serve the 3rd Rukun Islam, which is Puasa (Fasting). Puasa does not only mean no eating or drinking which is physical, but also spiritually. Anger, hate, lust, and all similar negative feelings should be avoided. Basically the mind have to be pure.

I am looking forward to the fasting month. Many things to look forward to. The bazaar Ramadhan is one of them. Others would be the preparations for Raya, buying new clothes and furniture (maybe), Zakat Fitrah (where we would do some social resposibility bit), Tarawih prayers, breaking fast gatherings and meriam buluh accidents (hahaha…so bad, but we do hear that on the news EVERY year right?).

The best thing of being in Malaysia is the harmony between races and religions. Where in the world can you find such thing? Malays, Chinese, Indians, all together celebrate each other’s festival. During puasa month, we can see them all in one place “shopping” for food in the bazaar Ramadhan around their neibourhoods. During Chinese New Year, we all would go and visit our friends and get Ang-pows. And during Deepavali, we would all visit our Hindu friends and celebrate the festivities together. It’s only in Malaysia, now that’s Truly Asia.

Rain, KLCC and a Hindi movie…

It was drizzling all evening. I left work at 6:30 and before I knew it, it started pouring heavily. I braved through the so called storm towards Ampang to pick Geena up. I know I should have changed the tyres of my car as it is without any grooves anymore. One small puddle can hurl the car into a uncontrollable spin, that if I travel in light speed. I know I was late, but I’m not taking any chances.

On a day like this when it’s pouring cats and dogs, there’s nothing like a good traffic jam. Queues as long as the road itself can be seen almost everywhere. Thanks to my navigational skills, I know many shortcuts as well. It doesn’t take long before I reached the Ampang Elevated Highway through many back lanes and a few potong queues.

The highway was not that effected by the rain. Traffic was almost none. I guess most of them are still stuck on the main roads. After a few kilometers I can see Great Eastern Mall on my right. That’s where I’m heading to meet Geena.

“Why so late?”

That was the first thing she asked when she got into the car.

“Aiyoh, biasa la. Raining like this sure jam ler. So mana mau pegi?”

“KLCC, I wanna watch the new Hindi movie.” she suggested.

“Urk! Whaa? Hindi movie? Alamak. Sure ke? Err…aaah…ermm… Ok la.”

Before long, we reached KLCC, parked the car and head up to TGV. The queue’s VERY long. But we waited with patience. “A good sleep in the cinema is what I’m looking for”, thinking to myself. What better time to sleep in the cinema than this? Hindi movie is not my juice. I can’t even pronounce the name right, let alone remembering it. I’d go for something futuristic or an epic type of movie.

The movie started at 8:15pm. We got seated, then soon the hall darkens and here comes my nap. But how wrong I was. The first half of the movie I was laughing my head off. I have never in my life experienced such hilarious Hindi movie. It’s not those stupid or corny jokes that were thrown, but the jokes were more matured and adult. It is all in the speech and not just actions. *Sigh*…there goes my nap.

I wanted to have my nap during the second half of the movie. Blew that chance again. The second half was abit slower and sad. But I can’t go to sleep because I was already “into” it that I wanted to know how it ends. Nevertheless it was a great movie. Yup. I said it. Great movie. Probably one of the best so far other than Kuch Kuch “hotak hang” and KKKG (I only remember the abreviation).

“Wei…you nangis ke?” Geena asked me.

“No la. Where got. This is not as sad as Click.”

I remember that movie by Adam Sandler, Click. Probably one of few movies that made me weep *sniff sniff*. Even my two best buddies had teary eyes while watching Click. There goes their machoness out the window. Heh heh.

The Hindi movie ends at almost 11pm. It’s a norm that a Hindi movie lasts for at least 3 hours. I wonder what would happen if GSC or TGV screens the Lord of The Ring Trilogy marathon….FULL uncut version? Wahlauu eh…sure cannot tahan ler.

Well. At least the Hindi movie was good. I honestly had a great time watching it, not to mention all the laughs as well. I’d do this again IF I know that the movie is worth my time. I think I will.

Cozy House

There’s a nice restaurant that serves good authentic Asian fusion food. Cozy House has been around for quite sometime now and had gained high reputation as one of the best blend of authentic meals.

Same as last week, Geena had to work in Great Eastern Mall, Ampang. Getting there during rush hour is a nightmare. Plus, it was raining quite heavily yesterday evening. Luckily, I had some errants do be done for the office and that already puts me in KL town.

After enduring the pain of sitting in the traffic jam for hours, I finally reached the mall at 6–ish. With a tired leg and a sore butt, I waited for Geena at the coffee terrace for a while. She came out of work a few minutes later and head over to have our dinner at Cozy House.

CozyCorner-4

Tell me who can resist a good sambal sotong? Cozy House’s delicious list of menus never seized to amaze. Just order anything from the menu, and it’ll turn out to be a mouth watering dish.

Apart from the *drool* sambal sotong, I haven’t had a good green paste curry for a long time. So once I spotted it on the menu, I didn’t hesitate to place that order.

CozyCorner-3

It was worth the pain getting there. I don’t mind going through those traffic jams again just to savour those wonderful dishes.

I’ll be sure to go there more often from now on. I know the food there has been good all this while but I never had the chance to actually try it. This will go on my list of top restaurants of choice.

p/s: I really need a better camera (phone) for better photo quality. Can’t carry my Digicam everywhere I go right?
